Making friends is so hard! So many adults (adult women especially) want more friends that it is ridiculous that it is so hard.
I always wanted to be in a book club, but was intimidated by the idea of sitting in a circle talking about the theme of the story and all the "talking points" listed at the end of the book. Plus, it's hard to find time to read now that I have kids, so I'm rarely able to finish the book in time. I ended up joining a group formed by some co-workers that has been going on since before I started. It is super relaxed, almost more of a restaurant club because we go to a different restaurant every month and may talk about the book for a few minutes but it's okay if you aren't able to finish.
The talking points at the end of the book feel like a lot of pressure-- totally with you on that. Love that you found a group that you connect with, and has the right vibe and commitment level for your current life stage.
I love this, Molly! I talk about books with everyone but have never been a part of a club. This spring, I decided to start a smut book club! Our first gathering (virtual) is this week so we’ll see how it goes. Interest has been enthusiastic, so I’m hopeful! If you love a sexy book lmk 😸
It's our first gathering, so we're just talking format, structure, etc. I'm excited to find out what folks want to read first! One of my fave smutty romance reads this year, though, was Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon – I highly recommend. (You might also appreciate the main character's arc as a ghost writer!)
Me too…I started one. It went for a while and ended but now I crave one but have nobody to ask. No neighbors. Everyone else has one tried but nobody had time but someday I will.
I read over 100 book a year and talk books with anyone. I started having friends at work but then became the supervisor….but I have my partner. I have situational friends (ones I learn energy work with, ones that my kids are in 4-H with so talk to there and someday I’ll have someone I can call in an emergency again 💜
I’d love to be part of a book club and envy you for having the courage to START one! Great books I’ve read lately: The Sentence by Louise Erdrich and of course, This American Ex-Wife by Liz Lenz.
This made me smile - you're right, it's hard to make friends as an adult! After my husband died a couple of years ago, I found myself in a fairly-new town with not one friend (he was my friend, and then he was gone). My library started a Make and Take Cookbook Club which I joined, and it's been phenomenal! Every month we get a new cookbook, and we each choose something to make. We bring our goodies to next month's club, where we all partake in the food, chat about the cookbook, bring home leftovers from everyone (as well as the cookbook for the next month).
I love to cook so this works for me. And I've made many new friends; in fact, I'm going out today on a tour of historic homes in town with one of the friends that I met in my club!
I love to read too, but book clubs make me nervous that I won't finish the book in time, and I've never joined one. I like that yours is approachable and no pressure! :)
I love the idea of a cookbook club! I can only imagine how hard it is to navigate a new town when your world has been turned upside down. It’s brave to put yourself out there like that and “make” yourself meet new people. Way to go!
Ahhh yes. Making friends as an adult. I am not good at this at all, but the friends I have made have been people I have sort of picked up along the way by accident rather than going out of my way to make friends. My friends are an interesting assortment of people with different interests and they don’t always match up with my other friends. I find groups of over 6 to be too many to keep up with and it stresses me out, so having a smaller circle works for me.
On the book front, I’m currently reading Cell by Stephen King - bloody good horror book! 💚
Small groups are where it’s at! I find coordinating with a bunch of people to be challenging and it kind of breaks my brain. I read a Stephen king book for the first time in a LONG time— Elevation. It was so weird and good. Endlessly impressed with that man’s imagination.
I feel like I could have written this (well - no so well as you, Molly). I, too, wondered why I wasn't invited to these magical book clubs and when I finally shared my FOMO with a neighbor, we decided to start our own. We now have 10 members (I sort of hate to even write "members" because it sounds too clubby; let's call them "readers") who get together every six weeks or so. It's been a wonderful way to get to know some of my neighbors better, and we all love reading books we might not have chosen for ourselves. And - if someone can't make a meeting - no big deal. Life happens! Good luck with you bookclub- enjoy!
Thank you for sharing! I am so glad I'm not the only one who has book club fomo. And like the term "readers", too. I will pull inspiration from your experience. ❤️

I feel for you on that! Glad we have the internet so at least there's the option to find threads about whatever you're reading online.
